Quality Time Spent with Kai

On Saturday, 6-27-20, Marcus and I spent some quality family time with Kai. She has still been struggling so much with the lack of time we spend, just the 3 of us. On Saturday, we took her bowling for the first time and then we ate ice cream at Special Scoops Ice Cream Parlor in Downtown Hastings.

Then Saturday night, Kai and I went back home to the farm and we finally got to do something I’ve been preparing her for all Spring – we got to pick mulberries! When I was a young girl, my Grandma Alice used to take me out to pick mulberries and then we would bake a mulberry pie. Then I did that with my nephews and niece a few summers back and we also made a mulberry pie from our harvested berries. Since early May, Kai and I have been going on morning walks and we would walk to our (or our neighbor’s) mulberry trees and check on their blooming progress. It’s been such a fun thing for her and I to do with our dogs. Then when Kehlani came early, we had to stop our walks and I was really afraid we had missed the best time to pick the berries but they were nice and ripe! We even went back out on Sunday evening and picked a second round to get more for our pie. I am thankful to live on the farm and be able to give my daughter(s) these amazing and special memories that I had as a kid.

On Sunday, I thought Kai might enjoy helping me “nest” since I didn’t get to do that during the pregnancy. My friend brought over a Pack-n-Play and we set up the basinet part of it. Then Kai wanted to play with her doll and play “hospital”. It was a little funny to me because I’ve been at the hospital so much, I just wanted to “play house” 🙂 Kai has always shown wonderful mothering and nurturing skills, I have no doubt she will be an amazing big sister.
